If I were to write everything I feel today, it would have to be a book.
Because today, 52 years ago, a legend was born.
My brother, Saulo Ribeiro.
The first in line of our family's legacy.
There are countless stories I could tell, but the one that stays with me most is not about championships.
It is about understanding people.
More specifically, understanding that sometimes the people who love you the most are not the ones who make you feel comfortable.
They are the ones who make you grow.
Saulo and I are very different.
To be honest, if it were not for Jiu Jitsu and family, I am not sure our paths would have crossed. That is how differently we see the world.
But over the years, I have learned that different does not mean distant.
Sometimes, it means necessary.
I remember one of the first times I experienced what I now call his tough love.
I was still training in Manaus and preparing for my first World Championship.
Instead of calling to encourage me, he called almost angry.
His first question was, "Why aren't you here training with me?"
At the time, I did not appreciate the delivery.
Today, I understand the message.
He did not want to control me.
He wanted me close because he believed he could help me become the best version of myself.
Now that I lead our team and spend my life helping others grow, I understand my brother more every year.
The people who love you the most are often willing to touch the wounds everyone else avoids.
Not to hurt you.
To heal you.
Growth begins where comfort ends.
And many people will sacrifice their growth just to protect their ego.
They avoid difficult conversations.
They hide behind excuses.
They stay in the shadows because the truth feels uncomfortable.
Saulo has never been interested in comfort.
He has an incredible ability to feel what people are avoiding.
When you speak to him, he listens beyond your words.
He keeps asking questions until you find the real problem.
He digs.
Relentlessly.
Not because he enjoys seeing people struggle.
Because he believes you cannot heal what you refuse to face.
That same mindset showed up every day on the mat.
His pressure was unlike anything I have ever felt.
People often describe it as strength.
It was not.
It was precision.
Every movement closed another door.
Every escape disappeared.
It felt like every small opening immediately filled with concrete.
You were never overwhelmed by force.
You were overwhelmed by understanding.
That is who Saulo has always been.
Precise.
Relentless.
Intentional.
Looking back now, I realize we all need someone like that in our lives.
Someone who tells us the truth.
Someone more interested in our growth than our approval.
Someone willing to risk being misunderstood because they care too much to let us remain where we are.
In every academy, every family, and every team, we will meet people who are different from us.
Some will challenge us.
Some will frustrate us.
Some will become exactly the teacher we needed.
If we are willing to see beyond our emotions, we may realize they were helping us become someone stronger all along.
This journey will test you.
It will expose your weaknesses.
It will ask more of you than you thought you could give.
But if you are fortunate, you will not walk it alone.
You will be surrounded by people who care enough to tell you the truth.
I know I was.
And I will always be grateful that my greatest teacher also happens to be my brother.
Happy Birthday, Saulo.
Thank you for never choosing the easy path when the right path mattered more.
